Exercise program helps patients with Parkinson’s improve movement, quality of life

GOSHEN, N.Y. (June 15, 2017)— Access Physical Therapy & Wellness is pleased to announce that Julie Benzenberg, PT, DPT, has completed the LSVT BIG Certification for the treatment of individuals with movement disorders related to Parkinson’s. Research on LSVT BIG has revealed improvement of motor functioning following treatment, including faster walking with bigger steps, improved balance, and improvements in activities of daily living.

LSVT BIG was developed upon the fundamental principles of the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), used in helping people with Parkinson’s improve speech intelligibility and volume.

Benzenberg, who practices at Access Physical Therapy & Wellness’ Goshen office, became certified in LSVT BIG because she wanted to be able to better help people with Parkinson’s disease.

“As a physical therapist, I have a passion for helping others reach their goals,” said Benzenberg. “When I researched the effectiveness of LSVT BIG in the treatment of individuals with Parkinson’s, I desired to pursue the Certification. I look forward to helping people with Parkinson’s meet their goals and improve their quality of life.”

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative neurological disorder that can have effects on the motor system. This can result in a person developing difficulties with movement, speed, and steadiness.

LSVT BIG is both standardized and individualized. Movement is emphasized through a specific protocol to improve everyday daily activities.
