MILFORD, P.A. (September 14, 2016)—Access Physical Therapy & Wellness is now offering a support group for those living with Parkinson’s disease and their families and care-partners. The group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month at Access Physical Therapy & Wellness in Milford at 518 Rte. 6 and 209.

Access, with offices in Dingmans Ferry, Milford, and Port Jervis, has specialized programs for those living with Parkinson’s’ disease. LSVT LOUD is used in helping patients with Parkinson’s improve speech intelligibility and volume. Ellen Knapp-Hayden, a physical therapy assistant for 12 years and a certified senior fitness specialist, was recently certified in the practice of LSVT BIG, a four-week exercise treatment program that improves the quality of movement in many cases by using repetition of core movements that are regularly used throughout the day.

The support group will be facilitated by Knapp-Hayden and Danielle Rizzo, customer service specialist. “Access Physical Therapy & Wellness is well suited to host this support group,” said Knapp-Hayden. “In addition to working with many people living with Parkinson’s disease, we also have many contacts with other professionals to bring in as speakers specializing in Parkinson’s disease.”

The support group was inspired by the annual involvement of Access in the Pocono FoxTrot 5K for Parkinson’s Research. Through the event, in addition to raising over $50,000 for Parkinson’s research for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a resource fair has been held to bring local and national resources to those living with Parkinson’s disease and their care-partners.

“I am delighted to be able to bring this additional resource to the Parkinson’s community,” said Marcia Guberman, founder of the Pocono FoxTrot 5K for Parkinson’s Research. “Up to this point, those of us in need of a support group had to travel to Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. The Milford group will give many people who are not able to travel to Honesdale another option.”
