Before a drug can go to market, it must go through several years of clinical studies to prove that it’s safe and effective. Surprisingly, there is no similar regulatory process for surgery. Studies on surgery are independent of any regulatory agency, and the results of studies done on surgical procedures have no effect on their continued use. Even when studies show that surgery is ineffective compared to physical therapy for treating certain injuries and ailments, many patients still choose the surgical procedures over the more effective therapy.
