Hawthorne Physical Therapy Clinic Specializes in Torticollis

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. (March 8, 2017)—The Hawthorne location of Access Physical Therapy & Wellness now specializes in the treatment of torticollis.

Torticollis is the medical term for a twisted neck, often referred to as “a crick in the neck” or wry neck. It occurs when the muscles that run up and toward the back of the neck become tight, weakened or thickened, causing the head to tilt.

There are multiple causes for torticollis, but the most common cause is sleeping with improper neck support or while exposed to a draft. Torticollis is painful, it restricts movement and can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

Untreated torticollis that lasts more than just a few days can also lead to additional problems, such as strength imbalances due to favoring one side of your body, hip dysplasia, scoliosis, difficulty with balance and, in infants, can lead to flattening of the skull (Plagiocephaly) and delayed cognitive development.

Torticollis can affect people of all ages, but congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is generally diagnosed within the first two months of life. If addressed early enough, 90% of infants treated for CMT are free of symptoms within the first year of life.

Regardless of the patients age, physical therapy is the primary treatment for all types of torticollis. Treatment is personalized to each patient but may include: stretching, strengthening, massage, positioning, taping, and a home exercise program.

The Hawthorne office is open on Monday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. most days of the week and you can make an appointment for yourself or your child without a prescription from your primary physician.

The Hawthorne clinic provides services for orthopedic injuries, back and neck pain, balance problems and dizziness, post-surgical recovery, torticollis, concussions, difficulty walking, headaches, TMJ, and various neurological conditions.
