Local Leader in Physical Therapy Community Believes that Education Never Ends

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. (May 4, 2017)—Regional director and owner of the three North Carolina locations of Access Physical Therapy & Wellness, Martha Harris, PT, DPT, GCS, CERT. DN, attended a North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners approved continuing education course on understanding and treating infants with plagiocephaly earlier this year.

“I believe that in a field like physical therapy, your education never truly ends,” said Harris. “With new technologies and advancements in medical science, the field is always changing, and if you don’t stay up-to-date with the most current information, then you’re not offering your patients the best treatment available.”

The course covered the differences between a normal and abnormal skull shape, as well as the severity levels for the three types of flat head syndrome: plagiocephaly, brachycephaly and scaphocephaly. The course also addressed the functional implications of abnormal head shape, including malocclusion of the jaw, compression of the base of the skull, developmental delay and difficulty wearing safety gear (helmets, goggles, glasses).

The treatment side of the course focused on intervention protocols for prevention and treatment, including repositioning, tummy time, treatment for torticollis, and in more severe cases, referral for the use of bands or helmets for treatment.
